Cath Lab 101

 The practical basics of the Cardiac Cath Lab.  This will describe the day-to-day operations in the lab, will describe the equipment, and will define the activities performed.  This course is approved for 6 contact hours by the CA Board of Registered Nurses and for 6 Category A credits by the ASRT.

Objectives

After completing this self-study activity, the student should be able to completely describe the following components of the Cardiac Cath Lab:

  • Cardiac Cath Supplies, both diagnostic and interventional
  • Peripheral supplies, both diagnostic and interventional
  • Paperwork included in both Cardiac and Peripheral procedures

  • Define terms used frequently in the Cardiac and Peripheral labs

Specifically, the student should be able to:

  • List and describe the different professions that compose the Cath Lab team
  • Recognize and name cardiac anatomy, both vascular and non-vascular
  • Recognize and name peripheral vascular anatomy
  • Describe the catheter pathway through the heart during a Right Heart Cath
  • Describe the support procedures
    • Intra-aortic Balloon Pump
    • Ventricular Assist Device
  • Define and describe Electrophysiology procedures
    • EP Study and Ablation
    • Implant
  • Recognize and describe the use of all procedural supplies
    • Needles and Access kits
    • Sheaths
    • Guidewires, diagnostic and interventional
    • Catheters, diagnostic and guide catheters (interventional)
    • Balloons and Stents
    • Inflation devices
    • Closure devices
  • Complete all paperwork involved in Cardiac Cath procedures
  • Recognize normal and abnormal lab values
  • Define and obtain proper informed consent
  • Properly prepare a patient for a Cardiac Cath procedure
  • Correctly lead a “TIME OUT” safety pause
  • Define the medications utilized for patient sedation and analgesia
  • Define and list the anti-coagulant medications used during interventional procedures
  • List and describe non-emergency medications used during a cardiac cath
  • List and describe emergency medications used during a cardiac cath procedure
  • Correctly list the workflows for Right and Left Heart Caths, diagnostic Peripheral angiography, and Cardiac and Peripheral Interventions
